British Aikido History
1955 - 2012

The official British Aikido History site - Is dedicated to the true history of Aikido in the UK from its inception in 1955 by the legendary Budo Master Kenshiro Abbe Sensei.

Right: Kenshiro Abbe Sensei with Ken Williams Sensei at the Hut Dojo.

Ken William Sensei was the first student of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei - he was also the first British student of Aikido - Henry Ellis was the personal assistant to Williams Sensei from 1957.

The site is maintained by AikiKai Shihans Henry Ellis and Derek Eastman -  The last two surviving pioneers from that exciting era of the birth of Aikido in the UK at the famous "Hut Dojo"

Ellis & Eastman Sensei's are co-authors of the book `Positive Aikido` - they are proud to have their diplomas signed by legends - Osensei Morihei Ueshiba - Kenshiro Abbe - Masahilo Nakazono - Masamichi Noro - TK Chiba - Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba.

Right: Henry Ellis - Mitsusuke Harada - Derek Eastman join Harada Sensei at the TK Chiba Celebration in 2006. Harada Sensei was invited to the UK in 1963 by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei - He held his first classes at the Hut Dojo. Harada had no students to begin with - Henry Ellis and Derek Eastman studied Karate with Harada, he in turn studied Aikido with them - Harada began to incorporate Aikido moves into his Shotokai Karate as can be seen in his teachings today.

July 21st - UK1 MMA - Rik `hammer`Ellis wins UK1 MMA Light Heavyweight Title

Rik `hammer` Ellis Aikido/MMA -`Prize Fighters & Fight Science Team -  UK.

Rik Ellis the son of Henry Ellis Shihan, a student of Aikido from the age of five years . Rik continues to enjoy his Aikido as taught to him by his father who was a direct student of the legendary Budo master Kenshiro Abbe Sensei.

Rik believes in his fathers teaching, whilst Aikido can be practised in harmony in the dojo - its dojo application is totally unsuitable for the street in a time of need.

Teachers should teach students how to adapt their Aikido to meet any, and all hostile situations - The problem is - many teachers are unable to adapt as they lack the fighting spirit which they hide behind the almost biblical teachings of cowardice by turning the other cheek.

Rik believes in `Positive Aikido` - If threatened - take a positive approach - deflect your opponents attack - enter - finish - no time to talk of aiki love, or floating around the universe - no time to breath through your toes or slap your attacker with a coloured ribbon. - This would be a good time to test your `no touch` throws , or perhaps try a `Ki Blast` ( reality check ) - Good luck

Rik `hammer Ellis  vs  Kriston `hulk` Buxey -  UK1 MMA Title Fight - Fight Science Arena - Aldershot - Hampshire - UK
                                                                                      Sat July 21st - 2012

Rik Ellis  Aikido - MMA wins in 46 seconds - first round.

Rik Ellis with his father Henry Ellis being presented with the UK1 MMA title and belt by Grant Waterman.

The Fight in Brief

Kriston Buxey really up for this fight - he brought it on from the bell with a great opening shot that spurred Rik Ellis in to action - in a title fight Rik was just as determined to win as was Buxey.
After the opening shot from Buxey - Rik`s natural Aikido allowed his 18 pounds heavier opponent to push him back into the cage wall where Rik made a very quick and effective tight `Tenkan` turn off the cage wall taking his opponent down into some punishing `ground n pound` finishing Buxey with a rear naked choke in the 46th second of the first round.

Rik `hammer` Ellis fought Kriston`hulk`Buxey for the UK1 MMA light heavyweight title and championship belt. Rik won with a RNC in a hard  fought 46 seconds. Don't let the 46 seconds undermine the battle that these two men fought.
Professional photos and video to be added as soon as available.

_______________________________________ Traditional Aikido Push-Ups from the 1950s ___________________________________________

1955 - Kenshiro Abbe Sensei intoduced these push-ups to strenghen the mind - wrists and fore-arms - Dan grades would do 200 each training session. The push-ups would be both with fingers pointing inwards and outwards, pulling the wrists in together - also same push-ups with the hands behind the back - still on the backs of the wrists. Whilst in the position below another dan grade would sit on your back .
The people who can't do these push-ups will claim `they are bad for you`.My father will tell you that in 55 years of Aikido he has never known one person to have any problems after doing these exercises. Demonstrated by Chuck Grifiths.

See `Older Posts`bottom of this pageTraditional Aikido

This is a much abused term used by many who have no concept of its true meaning in relation to Aikido.Sadly, Aikido has changed in so many ways. Many teachers and students have no value or respect for Tradition - history or lineage, the simple reason is, these people have no sound lineage,my father has said that it was unheard of for people to grade themselves, now many are awarding themselves unrealistic grades and titles that have no value outside their own dojo or organisation, they then award grades to others who will go on to spawn much more of the same nonsense.

Gozo Shihoda said; "People try to reach the highest levels without even paying their dues. That’s why it seems so much like a dance these days".

I never suggest to anyone they should try mma,to fight in the cage is as tough as it gets, mma/cage has to be a personal decision.Only you know if you are tough enough to enter the cage.

If you practice a choreographed dancing Aikido as many do,take a close look at what you are actually doing to the name of Aikido. There is a need to learn to adapt technique so it is both enjoyable in general practice, and just as importantly condensed to be effective in a hostile situation.
The plastic samurai can't hide forever behind those pseudo religious excuses which stand for nothing in the street.
A technique applied in the street resembles nothing seen in dojo practice, your assailant does not harmonise with you,he does not know how to break-fall,so any applied technique, if it works?? will put your opponent down in a heap, not pretty, but can be effective only if you learn to adapt.

Levelled with Love
I know of a 6th dan Aikido who was levelled by a sixteen year old kid in the street. How did sensei explain all those years of training to his family who would expect to be protected ?. Perhaps Sensei told the young lad that Aikido was love ? now, that is guaranteed to get you filled in.

I recently saw where a UK Ki teacher was pleased and proud to accept a promotion to 7th dan by his own students,he then audaciously claims to be one of the most respected and highest grades in the world.-- Of course he is!!--.
We also know that Shihan Daffy Duck is alive and well.

Gozo Shioda Sensei on Modern Aikido

>Gozo Shioda, [Quote:]Today’s aikido is so dimensionless. It’s hollow, empty on the inside. People try to reach the highest levels without even paying their dues. That’s why it seems so much like a dance these days. You have to master the very basics solidly, with your body, and then proceed to develop to the higher levels…. Now we see nothing but copying or imitation without any grasp of the real thing…. [Unquote]

My father Henry Ellis Sensei has been saying this for many years. He also said after Traditional Aikido there would be many variations of Aikido for those without true fighting spirit - such as `Ki Aikido` - `Choregraphed Aikido` - `Psuedo Religeous Aikido` - `Comedy Aikido` - `Aikido with Ribbons` - `No Touch Aikido` and the `Plastic Samurai`.

Kenshiro Abbe" No matter your pretense, you are what you are and nothing more".
